The iPhone 17 Pro could redefine Apple’s professional color strategy

After two years of making iPhone Pro models out of titanium and several more years out of stainless steel, Apple is rumored to be switching to aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro. Instead, titanium will be used in the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air.

That may seem like a step away from the Pro model’s premium materials. For anyone bored with the gray color variations of Apple’s best iPhones, this seems to be good news.

The reason is because of the color.

Apple has done a good job of making a range of colors in stainless steel and titanium. Black, silver, gray, and gold variations are joined by blue, green, and purple versions.

The cool blue iPhone 12 Pro was my favorite, but the dark purple iPhone 14 Pro looks to be the boldest choice yet. My least favorite was the iPhone 13 Pro in a very muted Sierra Blue, and its mid-cycle arrival in Alpine Green took it out of the running for me.

For the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, it seems possible that we might actually see a color that can’t be confused with silver or black. The rumored orange variant looks similar to the coral iPhone XR. Say what you will about the iPhone XR’s specs, but color is something Apple has done well with this model.

Recently, standard iPhone 16 models showed just how capable Apple is in anodized aluminum manufacturing. The iMac line is another example of Apple’s best color work with materials. Even the aluminum Apple Watch excels at bold colors. There really aren’t great examples of Apple making vibrant, fun colors with stainless steel or titanium.

If Majin Bu’s latest post showing off an orange iPhone 17 Pro toy unit is anything like what Apple will unveil next month, I can definitely live with an orange space shuttle astronaut suit for a while.
