Apple reported its fiscal third-quarter 2025 earnings today, beating analysts’ expectations in key categories like revenue, earnings per share, iPhone revenue, and more.
During a call with analysts today, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple has just passed another major milestone: three billion iPhones shipped since its launch in 2007.
For those keeping track at home, Apple shipped its billionth iPhone in July 2016, nine years after the first iPhone was released. At the time, Cook described the iPhone as “one of the most important and successful products in history.”
Apple has not publicly announced when the 2 billionth iPhone will be shipped, although analysts estimate it will occur around September 2021.
Cook’s comments came during Apple’s Q3 2025 earnings call today, without much fanfare. “We also recently achieved an important milestone. We have shipped the 3 billionth iPhone since its launch in 2007,” Cook said during his prepared remarks.
The number is notable because Apple stopped reporting unit sales for its hardware products in November 2018. Luca Maestri, Apple’s then-CFO, said at the time that “the number of units sold in a quarter does not represent the underlying condition of the business.”
