Apple introduces Digital ID, a new way to create and present an ID in Apple Wallet
Digital ID provides a secure and private way for users to create an ID in Apple Wallet using information from their US passport, and present their identity using their iPhone or Apple Watch
Apple today announced the launch of Digital ID, a new way for users to create an ID in Apple Wallet using information from their U.S. passport, and present it securely and privately to their iPhone or Apple Watch. At launch, Digital ID Acceptance will first be rolled out in a pilot at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 U.S. airports to verify personal identity during domestic travel, with additional use cases for Digital ID Acceptance to come.
Digital ID gives more people a way to create and present an ID in Apple Wallet even if they don’t have a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID. A digital ID is not a substitute for a physical passport, and cannot be used for international travel and to cross borders in place of a US passport.
“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity, all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “Since introducing the ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet in 2022, we’ve seen how much users love having their identity right on their devices. Digital IDs provide this secure and convenient option to more users across the country, as they can now add an ID to Wallet using the information from their U.S. passport.”
The launch follows the ability for users to add an eligible driver’s license and state ID to Apple Wallet. If users don’t have a US passport to create their digital identity, they still can Add an eligible driver’s license to Apple Wallet.
Add a digital ID to Apple Wallet
Users can easily create a digital ID and add it to Apple Wallet using a US passport. They start by tapping the Add (+) button at the top of the screen in Wallet on their iPhone and then selecting their driver’s license or ID cards. They then select the digital ID and follow the on-screen instructions to begin the setup and verification process.
Users are then required to use their iPhone to scan the photo page of their physical passport as part of the process. They will also be asked to use their iPhone to read the chip embedded on the back of their passport to ensure the data is correct. From there, they’ll be asked to take a selfie for verification, and as another security step, they’ll also be asked to complete a series of facial and head movements during the setup process. After verification, their digital ID is added to Wallet.
Use your digital ID in Apple Wallet
To present a digital ID in person, users can double-click the side button or the Home button to access Apple Wallet and select digital ID. From there, they can place their iPhone or Apple Watch near the ID reader, review the specific information requested, and use Face ID or Touch ID to authenticate.
In the future, users will be able to present their digital identity to additional select companies and organizations to verify identity and age in person, in apps and online.
Provide digital identity in a secure and private way
Like all IDs in Apple Wallet, the Digital ID leverages the privacy and security features already built into iPhone and Apple Watch to help protect against tampering and theft. Digital identity data is encrypted. When users create a digital identity, their passport data is stored on the device. Apple cannot know when and where users provide their identities, or what data is provided. Biometric authentication using Face ID or Touch ID also ensures that only the owner of the digital ID can provide it.
Only the information necessary for the transaction is provided, and the user has the opportunity to review and approve the requested information using Face ID or Touch ID before sharing it. Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to provide their identity.

Today, the ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet is available in 12 states plus Puerto Rico. In just the past six months, the feature has reached Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia, and was launched globally for the first time in Japan with My Number Card on iPhone.
