Apple today updated its system List of vintage products With two new iPhone models, it also moved two other iPad models to its legacy product list. This means that some Apple devices may not be easily repairable.
Apple maintains existing of old and vintage products on its website. This list is for repair service purposes and is generally a guideline on the availability of replacement parts. (via MacRumors)
A device is classified as vintage when it has been sold for no more than 5 years but less than 7 years. After this point, Apple no longer guarantees the availability of parts for repairs. Once it crosses the 7-year mark, it becomes “obsolete,” which means hardware service for said product will be discontinued, whether that be at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Today, two beloved iPhone models have joined the legacy lineup: iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8. This applies to all iPhone 7 Plus models, as well as the 64GB and 256GB iPhone 8 models. The 128GB iPhone 8 models are not obsolete yet, nor are the iPhone 8 Plus models in colors other than PRODUCT(RED).
Apple’s legacy iPhone lineup currently consists of:
- iPhone 4 (8GB)
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 6s (16GB/64GB/128GB)
- iPhone 6s plus
- iPhone SE
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 8 (64GB/256GB)
- iPhone 8 (product) red
- iPhone 8 Plus (product) red
- iPhone
- iPhone XS Max
Apple has also moved the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 2 from Vintage to Obsolete status, meaning repairs using first-party parts for those devices are no longer available.
