Gaming experience
I’m definitely nothing more than a casual gamer, so I was excited to try this out Control! It feels high quality and responsive. This was my first time playing mobile games with ControlAnd it definitely improves the experience.
Spine application
One of the great things about Backbone controllers is that they’re not platform-specific. This extends to their app as well: you can play games on your phone, or stream games from GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It works with the Steam Link app as well.
Backbone also offers a subscription service, Backbone+, which offers features like a classic game emulator, rewards on certain games, and more.
Finally, a dedicated orange button gives you one-click access to the Backbone app.
Apple games
In addition to their own app, Backbone features full integration with Apple Games. It supports controller profiles, works in the Apple Games app and supported games, and can even open Apple’s game overlay by pressing and holding the Backbone button.
Ports
Both Backbone controllers feature a USB-C port and a headphone jack. The USB-C port allows for pass-through charging for long gaming sessions.
If you’re someone who prefers a completely wired setup, the USB-C port allows for a wired connection to almost any device. And when gaming on your phone, you can use the headphone jack to connect wired headphones instead of relying on Bluetooth.
Spinal simulator
My favorite part of the Backbone+ subscription is the built-in emulator. It’s designed to be as simple as possible: just upload your (legally obtained) file, and the app will automatically handle the saves. I tried it out with two of my favorite classic games, and playing them with the controller was noticeably better than playing them with the touchscreen.
